FAQ

  • Is pilates like yoga?

There’s absolutely some crossover between the two, like the focus on improving core strength and overall flexibility, but they vary in their approach. Pilates primary focus is on spinal articulation, stability, precision of movement, and postural alignment. It also incorporates resistance training, depending on the apparatus being used. Yoga touches on these as well, but the focus is geared more towards meditation, flowing through movement, and static holds.

  • What are the benefits of pilates?

Pilates offers a wide variety of benefits, including improving your flexibility, core strength, posture, joint mobility, overall strength, balance, flexibility, and managing stress. You will also notice a significant difference in daily tasks, such as bending, crouching, kneeling, and walking due to increased range of motion and reduced aching/tenderness in your joints.

In addition, the approach I use focuses on using pilates to improve pelvic floor health, which can reduce back pain, hip pain, and pelvic pain while improving low back and hip mobility and deep core strengthening.

  • How often should I do pilates?

The frequency that’s best for you depends on your individual goals and fitness levels, but for best results I would suggest between 2-3x a week, especially as you are getting started. Because we’re working on posture, core strengthening, and stability, your body won’t need as much recovery time between sessions and it keeps your muscles from reverting back to their compensatory state.

  • Is pilates good for back pain?

Yes! Pilates is great for back pain. The gradual and precise approach to addressing acute or chronic back pain begins with accessing deep core muscles to stabilize the spine in a neutral position. Then, once a good foundation is set, we can begin introducing rotation and articulation, as tolerated. Pilates will use stability challenges to target the core and back muscles, starting with small movements, then working towards more dynamic exercises to ensure strength and mobility are equal participants - reducing the risk of injury.

  • What is Reformer pilates?

Pilates has many different forms of apparatus - like a gym having many pieces of equipment. The reformer has a frame with a sliding platform, attached by springs for resistance, which can add intensity or stability to each exercise. The Reformer is extremely beneficial and helps ensure each movement is targeted and adjusted to the right amount of challenge. While it can look a little intimidating, we find that most people love it once they give it a try!

  • Who can benefit from pilates?

Almost everyone can benefit from pilates. This includes, teenagers prevent sporting injuries, adults with chronic pain, individuals with pelvic dysfunction or neurological diseases, athletes pushing through plateaus, and older adults in nursing facilities working to maintain balance and mobility. With a background in Occupational Therapy Assisting, I have a unique advantage of understanding and working with individuals who have disabilities. I have witnessed how movement can help managing symptoms and increase access to meaningful activities.

  • Will I be sore afterwards?

Yes, it is common to feel sore after pilates. You may also feel fatigued after the first few sessions, as your nervous system readjusts to this new style of movement, then after a couple weeks of consistency, you likely feel less sore and notice a significant increase in energy!

  • What should I wear to a session?

Comfort is key. Leggings and a tank top or shirt are recommended, but nothing too loose. You will likely be doing moves that involve elevating your legs, so if you’re used to wearing loose shorts, I would suggest wearing some leggings or spandex shorts underneath. Please also bring a pair of grip socks for our session. I have my recommended brands listed under the store tab of my website.

  • Do I need to bring anything to a session?

You will need a pair of grip socks and a water bottle. There is also filtered water and cups available in the studio.

  • Can pilates help me lose weight?

Pilates will help you feel more toned, but it isn’t specifically designed for weight loss.

  • How soon will I see results from the sessions?

It depends on the person and frequency, but if you’re coming 2x/week, you will likely start feeling results in just a few weeks!

  • Why is pilates more expensive than an exercise class?

Pilates sessions are very hands on and tailored to your body. The training is not only expensive, but incredibly in depth as it covers anatomy, postural assessments, injury modifications, and mastery of all apparatus. Instructors will often increase their rates after many years of experience and continuing education courses. The equipment is also very expensive to purchase and maintain, which increases costs.

  • What's your cancellation policy?

While your booked sessions are non-refundable, you can reschedule if you give at least 12 hours' notice. If something comes up with less than 12 hours to go, the session fee will need to be charged in full – but don't worry, each client gets one free late cancellation every three months because we know life happens!

The building is gated, so a code will be sent to you after scheduling. You can use this code at either end of the building, then I’ll be in the suite directly above the Mexican restaurant. Take the stairwell attached to the backside of the restaurant to the second floor and you will see me at the top of the stairs!

  • What can I expect from a virtual session?

Once you’ve made your appointment, an email will be sent to your inbox with a  “google meet” link. You will use that link to sign in at the time of your session - ideally on a computer or laptop. I always start our sessions by checking in with your body to determine if any modifications need to be made to the exercise plan. Each exercise will be explained along with the tools you will be using, then further cueing and adjustments will be provided throughout the workout to correct form and breathwork - just as I would do in person. The great thing about doing virtual sessions is that you don’t need to leave the house and you can stick to your routine when traveling - if that’s your vaca vibe. You also don’t need to block out travel time or manage child care!

  • What do I need for a virtual session?

A list of exercise equipment is provided on the “store” tab of my website. The list will vary depending on what appointment type you are looking for, but all sessions require at least a yoga block, a few resistance bands, and a throw pillow or meditation cushion.  You will also need wifi and ideally a computer or tablet for the session.

  • Is there parking?

There is street parking available for free!

  • Is there a place I can change clothes?

Yes! There is a private bathroom connected to the outside of the studio with plenty of room to change in and out of your exercise clothes.
